As running continues to grow in popularity, so does the market for running shoes. With so many options available, it can be overwhelming to choose the right pair of running shoes for your specific needs. It’s important to get yourself in the proper footwear before logging a bunch of miles. At the end, we’ll recommend where to go for proper fitting. Let’s briefly explore the different types of running shoes and what they’re designed for.

Neutral Running Shoes

Neutral running shoes are designed for runners with a neutral foot strike pattern. This means that the foot lands on the outside of the heel and rolls slightly inward before lifting off the ground. Neutral shoes provide cushioning and support without any additional features for overpronation or underpronation. They are versatile and can be used for a variety of distances and terrains.

Stability Running Shoes

Stability running shoes are designed for runners with mild to moderate overpronation. Overpronation occurs when the foot rolls inward excessively, which can place a lot of stress on the ligaments, muscles, and joints of the ankle & knee. Stability shoes offer extra & often for firm support on the inside of the foot to prevent overpronation. 

Motion Control Running Shoes

Motion control running shoes are designed for runners with severe overpronation. They provide even more support on the inside of the foot to prevent excessive rolling. These shoes are typically heavier and less flexible than other types of running shoes. They are reserved for runners who need the highest level of support and stability.

Minimalist Running Shoes

Minimalist running shoes are designed to mimic barefoot running by providing minimal support and cushioning. They have a low heel-to-toe drop, which promotes a more natural running form. This can drastically change the running mechanics and the amount of stress being delivered through the lower chain. Minimalist shoes are best suited for experienced runners with strong foot and leg muscles. This design requires much more calf & achilles extensibility and strength.

Trail Running Shoes

Trail running shoes are designed for off-road running and provide additional traction, support, and durability. They have a more aggressive outsole for better grip on uneven terrain. Trail shoes also offer additional protection against rocks, roots, and other obstacles. These are ideal for runners who enjoy trail running or want to explore off-road terrain.

So, make sure you choose the right pair of running shoes to enhance your running experience and prevent injuries. It is important to consider your foot type, pronation, and the type of terrain you will be running on when selecting a pair of running shoes. We suggest going to a running shoe store to have your feet & gait (walking pattern) assessed, and you’ll be recommended a certain type based on your assessment and goals.
